This was the preschool parking lot when I went to pick up Flower today. And this photo doesn't show the other two or three that were next to me. Really? Is this your only choice of vehicle once you have more then one child? I can think of so many others! Take, for example, our Jeep Cherokee. We can fit three car seats in our back seat. There are suburbans and other SUV's. Why does everyone immediately lose their dignity when they have kids? I will never own a mini van. I just can't do it. It's like you've given up and let your entire identity be ruled by the fact that you have children. And yes, I know they come souped up these days but still, they are the ultimate I've-lost-all-my-cool mom car. And besides, I don't want a car that has dvd players and so on therefore souped up doesn't matter to me. I want to connect with my kids. And yes, we take VERY LONG car rides, for example driving from Boise to Las Vegas to Arizona to Utah and back to Boise. And the kid did fine. She did fine when we drove to the Oregon coast to California and back to Boise. I was fine without that stuff growing up, making up some of the best memories of my life on those long car rides. When I was 11, the six of us drove to New York and back making lots of stops along the way during a three week trip, with no other entertainment but ourselves and we did just fine. And don't get me started on how I feel about seeing little kids watching movies in the car AROUND TOWN! Really? Is that really necessary? Talk to them people. Or sing along to awesome music. My Volkswagen Bus is the closest thing to a mini van I will ever own and that is the furthest thing away from souped up you can get. And since I'm sharing my opinion, let me just say that I dislike it when I'm cruising along in Google Reader, enjoying the convenience of having all my blog reads in one place and come to a screeching halt of convenience because someone has theirs set up in the condensed version so you have to go to their blog to finish reading it. Why? WHY?
I also dislike word verification after leaving a comment. It isn't necessary!

*Interesting coincidence...I realized today that the two moms I talk with the most in Flower's class are the only two that don't drive a mini van. This was of course realized after connections were made, not before. I'm not that shallow.

I totally agree with you about Vans...I'll never have one. I also hate when people have condensed blogs on reader. Why even have it on reader? I have word verification though because I got some "junk mail" comments a while back. Ever since I started comment verification they went away.
I agree with you about the vans also! Ryan and I have had that conversation before. He feels the same way. He also said that you guys had fun when you traveled and he says no to the DVD players. I usually don't go to the blog if they have it condensed unless I am just really interested in their post. I know it's mean, but I don't like that either!
I've gotten "junk mail" comments before also that's why I changed mine to word verification. I also got weird comments which is why I changed mine to be moderated.
I will admit that I have driven a mini van for 14 years. WAY before I had kids. I did need it to ferry my church youth group around and to take incredible road trips where I'd sleep in the van. The Beater as she came to be known has been with me for more than 200,000 miles and still gets better than 20 MPG (brother in law still driving it). I did not want another mini van when I went shopping last June, but I couldn't get anything that would have as good gas mileage and seat the seven people I frequently tote around. So, heavy sigh, I went back to the Minivan. A lot of improvements through the years but I still didn't get one w/a dvd player. Even if I didn't have 2 blind kids, I wouldn't have. Nothing like a good rousing Down By the Bay song to make the miles pass. :)
I have the comment thing enabled for the spam, but what gets me is the people who take their blogs private and you have to sign in to get there and they STILL have you word verification.
I have to say I love my van and don't feel like I'm not a cool mom because I drive one. Here's why it works for us. I really wanted a car that I could load up with 8 people and still have room for vacation stuff. There are many SUV's that will have the optional 3rd row. However, if you set up the back seat you lose virtually all of your packing room – unless you go into the larger SUV’s. With the mini-van I get both and still get pretty good gas mileage. Now I can take trips with my sister. We can all load up in one car with our kids and we have plenty of room for our stuff (we can’t do this in her SUV). I guess this is what makes everyone different.

I agree on the mini vans. never will I own one. I love my Chevy Trailblazer and it worked great for driving from Idaho to North Dakota and back when we moved. I am guilty of having car DVD players, but they did come in handy for the doing N.D. to Idaho in 2 days, but we did singing and other silly stuff too and occassionaly I turn them on for the drive from Mtn. Home to Boise.
I could not have said it any better. I as well, will never own a mini van. Call it pride...call it whatever you'd like. I just can't. do. it.

PS...we do have a dvd player in our vehicle. So, I guess I'm a little lower on your totem pole now. But, my children do not watch movies around town.
I agree sister! I have a ford explorer that seatds 7 comfortably! It works for me and I still don't look like a mom that has lost her cool! I love how you put it...your blogs always make me smile! Thank you!
We had a VW eurovan that I loooved and was sad to say goodbbye to. But then we had a minivan yuck gag choke. I got rid of it as soon as I could and now I drive a Suburban. Nothing compares to my VW... Nothing. But the sub fills the huge hole in my heart enough. And it hauls more people than my van did. I couldn't agree with you more.
Okay ... I might regret this but I just have to ask ... what's so bad about a minivan? I've never owned one, but they seem quite practical for families with lots of kids. I guess I'm just not a "car person" -- if it gets me and my cargo (human or otherwise) where I need to be, it's all good. :-)
I totally relate to this... I'm anti-mini van, baby! Not to mention that something about owning a mini van changes you into the worse, most oblivious driver on the road. I've even seen dad's go bad... I'm not making this up... true story :)
guilty on the van but totally agree about the videos........let them look out the window and enjoy the scenery and talk to their family. Actially have grown to love al l the room in the van
Really, are you trying to convince others you are too cool for the minivan or is it yourself you want to convince? What gives with dissing the M-van? Me doth thinketh thou doth protesth too much-eth.
